West Bromwich Albion manager Carlos Corberán has revealed his desire to give the club the “greatest possible achievements” to help repay the “love” he’s been shown by the fanbase.

The Spanish boss has been speaking to Panenka in Spain regarding his time at the Hawthorns so far, after arriving as manager in October last year.

He joined the club as they were languishing at the wrong end of the Championship table but eventually managed to turn things around and guide them to a ninth placed finish and just three points outside of the top six.

This season he has West Brom sitting seventh in the table with 26 points from 16 games so far, level on points with Sunderland in sixth.

The hope is that they can compete at that end of the table throughout the rest of the season, although with a 13-point gap already between the top two and themselves, an automatic promotion place seems unlikely.

Instead, a shot at the play-offs looks more realistic, something Corberán has experience of achieving after getting Huddersfield Town to the play-off final in 2022, which they lost to Nottingham Forest.

His aims for West Brom are considerably higher, though, with him revealing as much in his latest comments.

“West Bromwich is a great team that I am delighted to work for,” he said.

“From the first day I have felt the love of the fans. I have the hope of giving the entity the greatest possible achievements.

“That in each game people feel represented with what we do and that they see that our commitment to the game is maximum. Every time I train, I do it for that. And I hope I can return the team to the category in which, for me, it deserves to be.”

Even though West Bromwich Albion midfielder Jeremy Sarmiento could not join Ecuador’s squad due to an injury, he’s been speaking to the South American media about his current form.

It was at the start of the month that the Baggies confirmed he’ll miss out for a few weeks, meaning he’d stay out of the World Cup qualifying rounds.

Sarmiento has now been interviewed by Mundo Deportivo EC, and in quotes relayed by El Universo, he claimed he’ll soon recover.

“I’m really looking forward to being back in the team. There’s not much time left to get back on the pitch.”

The Brighton loanee recalled that he also had some bad luck with the Seagulls, and will be looking forward to recovering well.

“As you know, with Brighton the plan was to get that habit of playing again, getting minutes, which is what is going to do me the most good for these injuries. That’s what we’re doing now. When I’m well again, I imagine I’ll be playing a lot more minutes, which is good for the national team as well.”

Sarmiento left Brighton to join West Brom on a season-long spell. He talked about his decision to move to the Championship, explaining that it’s all a part of his plan.

“Yes, I’ve sat down with my dad a few times. People can see this as a step back, but sometimes you have to take one step back to take two steps forward. It suits me very well, because we know the manager here at West Bromwich.”

The player had some praise for Carlos Corberán, insisting they have a great relationship at the club.

“He has a good plan with me, with my injuries, and he also wants me to improve as a player. I still have that patience, that my best is yet to come.”

Sarmiento has made ten appearances for West Brom so far, being mostly used in the second half. The Baggies are still to confirm when he’ll be fully fit and can return to the team.

Following the stories linking West Bromwich Albion midfielder Okay Yokuslu to a move to Galatasaray this summer, we now get to see this rumour getting clarified in the Turkish media.

Outlet Aksam today features a story recalling that the 29-year-old had been in the Istanbul side’s ‘agenda’, and highlights the quotes from his agent about that potential move.

Batur Altiparmat was interviewed by BeIN Sports, and according to him, there were a few clubs interested in taking Yokuslu from West Brom.

“First of all, let me say that there was no communication with us from Galatasaray. We were called at the beginning of the season and asked about our situation. We said that we wanted to continue our football life in England and we were not interested. Some Turkish clubs also asked about his situation,” said Altiparmat.

The agent highlighted how committed they were to keep the player at West Brom.

“We are determined to continue our football life in England unless there is an extraordinary situation.”

Yokuslu hasn’t played for the Turkish national team since 2021, and his representative also addressed the situation.

“I think Mr Kuntz came in September 2021. At that time, a phone call was made to Okay because Okay did not play continuously at Celta Vigo and was told, ‘You do not play continuously, so we will not call you to this squad, but when you start playing, you always have a place in this squad’. But last year, although he played nearly 40 games, he was not called up. Of course we respect the decision of the technical director. If they call him, he will gladly come and play.”

Signed on a free transfer from Celta de Vigo in the summer of 2022, Yokuslu has 63 appearances for West Brom so far. This season, he was a starter in all of the Baggies’ match in the Championship.

With his agent sounding like the player is very much focusing on staying in England, there should probably be no reason to worry about a move back to Turkey in the upcoming transfer windows.

West Bromwich Albion had Belgian manager Carl Hoefkens as a target for the job had Carlos Corberán gone to Leeds, according to reports today.

As outlet Voetbal Nieuws brings a piece with the coach’s first quotes since his departure from Club Brugge last year, they write about a club who wanted him signing.

It all starts with Hoefkens, covering the interview with Het Laatste Nieuws, revealing that he had recent approaches.

“I’ve had offers, yes. But I don’t care. I’m ambitious. I don’t think my future has been damaged by my passage at Club Brugge and I’m certainly looking ahead. We’ll see what the future has in store for me.”

Then Voetbal Nieuws comes up that the manager was ‘in the picture’ at West Brom. It’s recalled that he played for the Baggies between 2007 and 2009, and pointed out that ‘there were question marks’ regarding the future of Carlos Corberán at the English club.

The report does not make it clear when this approach for Hoefkens was done, as Corberán remains in the job, but it’s safe to say that it will have come around the time Leeds were sniffing around and West Brom were just covering their backs.

West Brom have had a huge improvement since the end of January, with 11 wins in their last 13 games, and the Baggies stand in 9th on the Championship table, meaning that contract extension in February is looking like a great decision now.

Leeds United face Everton in the league clash on Saturday and it will be their third fixture without a permanent manager.

On February 6th, the Whites sacked Jesse Marsch and are searching the market to appoint his successor.

Michael Skubala has been appointed as the interim manager and Leeds confirmed earlier this week that he will continue to lead the club for the “upcoming fixtures”.

The Premier League side have seen Rayo Vallecano manager Andoni Iraola and Feyenoord manager Arne Slot already reject an opportunity to join them. Carlos Corberán can also be added to this list.

Mundo Deportivo state the 39-year-old’s work at West Bromwich Albion has caught Leeds’ attention so much so that they ‘took an interest’ in him and thought of appointing him as Marsch’s successor.

The Spaniard didn’t entertain the Premier League side and ‘remained faithful’ to West Brom.

He feels comfortable at the Hawthorns, where he has extended the deal until 2027.

Corberán joined the Championship side last October and has helped West Brom collect 30 points from 14 league matches. This has seen them sit in the 10th spot, trailing sixth placed Watford by two points.

Carlos Corberán arrived at West Bromwich Albion towards the end of October last year, and took over a club in the relegation zone.

Now instead of dreading the drop from the Championship, the Baggies are able to look the other way, and towards promotion to the Premier League.

The Spanish manager has taken West Brom to ninth in the table and they have a serious shot of making the play-offs.

Corberán, of course, has experience of the play-offs, with his Huddersfield Town side losing to Nottingham Forest in last year’s final.

Speaking to Mundo Deportivo for their Sunday edition, the manager has said that’s the only match he hasn’t watched back from his time with Huddersfield, partly because he knew his time at the club was over and partly because of the obvious pain associated with it.

Mundo Deportivo wanted to know about a possible move to a Spanish club, so they asked the manager when he’ll be working in the country.

The West Brom boss replied: “That is not solely up to me. I feel happy to be able to dedicate myself to this work and what I long for is to continue doing this.”

That wasn’t enough for Mundo Deportivo, who then asked about offers from Spain, to which Corberán responded: “I’ve already had the opportunity to train a second division team (in Spain) and it is always appreciated that there is interest. It is reason to be satisfied.”

On his quick success with West Brom and what he found when he arrived at the club, the Spaniard said: “In football, the results greatly mark the mentality of the player on an emotional level and we knew that the sooner we achieved good results, the sooner they would feel capable of reversing the situation.

“First and foremost, I found footballers with a very high level of commitment, a balanced squad and a group predisposed to give their best.”

West Bromwich Albion could have been handed their second chance at signing Hertha Berlin striker David Selke as he eyes a move in January.

That’s according to BILD, who say the striker turned down a move to the Hawthorns in the summer but now could have changed his mind.

They explain that a ‘winter change is getting closer’ for the player, who has managed just 209 minutes of action in 11 games this season.

As a result he wants to leave in the January transfer window and has already ‘informed’ his club of ‘his desire to move’. However, it remains to be seen whether Hertha will allow him to do so.

Selke’s contract at Hertha expires in the summer so any transfer would likely be on a free but they consider the player, who they paid €8m for in 2017, as someone who still has a market.

While they would more than happily get his wages, which are more than €3m a year, off the books, they would also like to recoup a figure for him.

That is something they could have done in the summer when West Brom and several other clubs showed an interest, but Selke ‘turned down all opportunities’ presented to him.

It’s suggested he would have preferred a move somewhere more glamorous, and there are now interested parties in Italy that could offer it to him.

It remains to be seen if they will get involved, though, with the only clear thing being that the striker ‘is looking for a new challenge’ to get playing time and enjoy his football again, something West Brom can offer him.

Without a club since leaving Olympiacos after 11 games, Carlos Corberan is about to land on his two feet at West Bromwich Albion.

The Baggies have been without a manager since sacking Steve Bruce two weeks ago, but it appears they are on the verge of appointing the Spaniard.

That’s according to AS, who claim the 39-year-old is ‘already travelling to English lands’ in order to give his new contract at West Brom a final look.

Once that’s approved and signed, Corberan will ‘immediately get to work’, as there is a ‘lot to do’, with the Championship side currently 23rd in the league after 16 games.

West Brom have won just two of those games, drawing eight and losing the remaining six, meaning they are two points above Huddersfield Town in the standings, but just three points behind Middlesbrough, who themselves have just appointed Michael Carrick as their new manager.

The hope is that Corberan can get the Baggies out of this situation relatively quickly, and get them climbing back up the table, as despite their poor start, they remain just 12 points behind a playoff spot.

It was close to the transfer deadline that Steven Alzate’s move from Brighton & Hove Albion to West Bromwich Albion was reported last night.

It was claimed by the English media that the striker was leaving the Seagulls to join the Baggies on a season-long loan, in search for more minutes in the Championship.

It turns out that the transfer was never confirmed, and according to reports from Colombia, there was actually no viable time for the player to switch from Brighton to West Brom.

Journalist Pipe Sierra writes that the player’s entourage ‘confirms’ that the FA ‘denied’ the possibility of extending the deadline for the move to be confirmed by the Baggies.

The report claims that ‘for now’, the player should be staying at Brighton.

Despite being born in London, Alzate has Colombian heritage and even has six caps for the South American country.

That’s why some news about his future are reported by the local media.

The striker only has one appearance for Brighton this season, as he played and scored in an EFL Cup match against Forest Green.

He’d certainly have more chances to play by moving to West Brom, but maybe that’s a transfer left for later, and by that we mean January.

Norwich City and West Bromwich Albion are both fighting for the signing of São Paulo midfielder Gabriel Sara, according to claims from Brazil.

Globo Esporte today states the Canaries and Baggies have both made bids to sign the 23-year-old.

The story doesn’t make it clear how much Norwich City or West Brom offered, or if the attempts are identical. It’s just claimed the bids could reach as much as £10.6m.

The report is quite positive about the player’s potential move to the Championship, stating there’s expectation for the deal to be done in the coming weeks, with ‘optimism’ from the player.

However, Norwich City or West Brom may still have to wait a little, because according to Globo Esporte, it’s not yet defined if the player would move now or finish the South American season at São Paulo and move to England in January.

Either way, Gabriel Sara wouldn’t be ready to play so soon, given he’s been recovering from an ankle injury since April, and will only return to training in August.

Globo Esporte highlight São Paulo’s need to sell some of their players, and that should definitely help the Canaries or Baggies to find a deal for the move.
